The Cultural Immersion Workshops create opportunities for encounters between children, art and local material and intangible heritage. In a playful way, Stay to Talk -Instituto de Imersão Cultural aims to create sharing spaces where the community celebrates heritage and identity. This year we are celebrating local crafts. During part of each day, they participants will be able to immerse themselves in traditional crafts, learning from local artisans and gaining insight into practices such as basket weaving, embroidery, pottery and weaving. Stay to Talk do not aim to create artists, but rather opportunities to learn about and promote the identity of the local community. These workshops serve as spaces where skills and knowledge are shared across generations.

Engraving is the oldest technique for reproducing images. In Portugal, for more than 3 centuries, Cordel literature was printed using wooden matrices. In this workshop, participants will be able to discover the history of the technique, reproduce these ancient techniques using contemporary materials and create their own Cordel literature!

For two weeks, young people will create small characters using moulded or figured regionalist ceramic techniques. On the 6th and 7th of April, family members and the town’s community are invited to participate in the workshop, helping to paint the ceramics created in the days before.

This hands-on experience introduces children to the art of shaping clay into their own unique creations. Guided by our skilled instructors, children will learn basic handbuilding techniques from simple pinch pots to more creative sculptures. The workshop, led by artisan José Domingos and Fundão’s Craftlab team, seeks to revive the tradition of crafting millet brooms, once a common household item in the region now fallen out of use. Participants will be guided through the construction process, utilizing sustainable and biodegradable materials. Through hands-on experience, attendees will learn traditional techniques and discover the ecological advantages of millet-based products, fostering a deeper connection to cultural heritage while promoting sustainability.

Children are invited to bring t-shirts from home that they no longer use, which we will turn into yarn. Then, using a very simple loom, made from a fruit box, we will explore, how to weave in simple ways and weave mini rugs with multiple uses! By learning this manual technique and unleashing one’s creativity, the participants will also learn about the importance of reusing.

WCCE has awarded grants to organisations all over Europe to take part in the EACD as part of the Crafting project co-funded by the European Union.
