STUDIO BOISSIERE | FRANCE/Ile de France/ Seine Saint Denis/ Montreuil | 1 – 2 April 2023

https://studioboissiere.com/

We will offer 2 types of workshop, a photo exhibition and visits of one of the oldest photo studio of our region.

Studio Boissière 268 Boulevard Aristide Briand 93100 MONTREUIL

Learn More

Our family has been running this photo studio for 70 years on, still located in the original building we have a shooting space, together with a darkroom equipped with a series of enlarger for silver printing. Participants will be invited to have their portrait taken and then witness the process of silver printing in our darkroom. On the Sunday we will address a younger audience and let children and parents discover the cyanotype process.

As stated above: we will offer the public 2 types of workshop based on the art of photography: silver printing and cyanotype. We’ve tested those workshops 2 years ago for the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the creation of our family run photo studio and we know they do bring a happy crowd. We have great success from the younger generation who is very curious to witness the silver printing process as a live experience inside our darkroom.

Analog photography is back into fashion, but still very few practice the printing techniques. The studio shooting experience is also not very common, and we are very keen on showing how light is used in the making of indoor portrait. We’ve had the inherited knowledge of 4 generations of photographers on this very studio.

On the Sunday we will address a younger audience: a family workshop where people will create their own unique cyanotype printing. Cyanotype is one of the oldest photo chemical process: it is based on the reaction of an iron based solution to sun light (UV). Contact negative printing and processing by water reaction gives a Prussian blue color to all parts exposed to sunlight.

For this special occasion we will use some of the most famous Roger KASPARIAN portraits of John Coltrane, Nina Simone, Charles Aznavour and Sylvie Vartan, as an opportunity for the public to know this photographer’s prolific and and home inherited work: the musical scene of the Sixties.

Saturday April 1st, 3pm-10pm and Sunday April 2nd 4pm-7pm The ‘darkroom experience’ will be running from 3pm to 10 pm, it is not a fast process and can take up to 2 hours, the public will be invited to enjoy an exhibition of the original photos from the 50’s, we will also have a DJ and a small bar in the original photoshop so that people can take time to exchange on the subject of photography.

March 30: In person talk / March 31: In person masterclass

Learn More

We invite founder of CRAAFTS Elif Malkoclar from Florence to share her knowledge in The Netherlands. CRAAFTS creates handmade accessoires and unique catwalk eye catchers for fashion houses such as Prada, Ferragamo, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent and Chanel. CRAAFTS is specialised in crafts techniques such as knitting, macramé, crochet and lace. CRAAFTS is not just a creative workplace, it is way more than that. They have built an enormous library of over 5000 unique and handmade samples from the world’s best craftsmen in fashion and interior.

In the Netherlands it is not often that makers work for major brands. This high-quality manufacturing industry seems to have disappeared. It is inspiring that CRAAFTS works worldwide. The story of CRAAFTS is appealing for makers but also the wider public. It’s all about dedication, passion and utmost attention to detail. March 30: Talk by Elif Malkoclar from CRAAFTS  The talk is open for everyone.

We think it’s a great opportunity to share this succesfull crafts story with the wider public during the European Artistic Craft Days.  March 30: Macramé masterclass by Elif Malkoclar from CRAAFTS  The following day we organise a macramé masterclass for Dutch makers (professional and crafts enthusiasts). In this way they learn the technique of a professional, they get to know each other and they can share ideas about (international) collaborations.

Each participant will dye their own fabric sample, choosing the color and fiber they want. This demo will also be especially important to make show people the different natural dyes that we have easily available to us in our own kitchens, and the process will be demonstrated in the simplest and easiest way possible, hoping this will bring participants even closer to the technique and break down any possible barriers that may exist. In addition, a small manual/text book will be produced in our studio (and given to each participant), with some of the main fundamentals of natural dyeing, some step-by-step recipes and many tips, so that each participant can reproduce what they have learned at home. This demonstration aims to connect participants to this ancestral technique, giving each one the necessary mechanisms to start their own path in the wonderful world of natural dyeing! 1st April 2023 / 14h00 – 18h00 – minimum number of participants: none – maximum number of participants: 20 people – no previous experience needed – all ages welcome – all materials included (bring paper and pen for some note taking!) – people will take home a sample from this experience – free entry, but mandatory booking by email (limited to the number of places available)

Ústredie ľudovej umeleckej výroby | Banská Bystrica | 29 March – 1 April 2023

Workshop, demonstration of craft

Regionálne centrum remesiel ÚĽUV, Dolná 14, Banská Bystrica

Learn More

The Centre for Folk Art Production (ÚĽUV) has a mission to safeguard and develop traditional crafts and home-made production in Slovakia. The ÚĽUV Regional Crafts Centre in Banská Bystrica is one of the three locations where organisation is active. A significant part of its activities is devoted to craft courses, which are popular among adults and children. Our main theme for 2023 is the dowing and processing of natural materials with focus on wickery in the context of developing a sustainable approach in everyday life. That is why during The European Artistic Craft Days our Regional Crafts Centre in Banská Bystrica plans to offer a workshop on making baskets from split bark to the professional and general public. This old technique was very widespread in Slovakia in the past. Nowadays, however, only a few enthusiasts are dedicated to it. It is the knowledge of one of them, Florián Šavrtka from Liptovské Revúce, who is already over 80 years old, that we have decided to bring to the public, as well as to the invited basketmakers and craft-designers, at this workshop, in order to help develop the technique of making bark baskets in the future. On the workshop the complete production will be presented from the beginning, in its different stages – from the collection and processing of the material to the weaving of the final product. The most difficult part of making bark baskets is the preparation of the material – finding suitable wood, steaming it, then splitting it into bark and finishing it with a timber shave. Without mastering this knowledge, it is impossible to start weaving. That is why two days of workshop will be devoted to this phase. The remaining two days will be dedicated to learning how to weave a basket. Master Florián Šavrtka will reproduce the procedure he learned in his family from his grandfather. Partcipants of the workshop will be experienced basketmakers and craft designers who will learn all the activities and related techniques. However, the event will also be open to the general public and scoolchildren, in order to make this technique, and alongside it handicraft work more popular in general. Of course, we plan to publicise the event not only before it takes place, but also after it has finished, in a trade craft magazine and in the regional media. ÚĽUV as a main organisator will provide working space, materials and tools for the workshop. All tools for the workshop are hand tools, without the use of electricity. There will be a limited number of benches for woodworking with a timber shave, also we would like to borow shave horses as procedeeding equipment for at least 8 participants. If demand exceeds supply, people will rotate at them. A portable wood steaming kiln will also need to be provided from outside of our organisation. We would like to invite at least 8 basketmakers and craft-designers. For schools and for the general public we will promote the event through our channels (web, FB, newsletter). As this is a highly specialised activity, we will not limit the maximum number of people who would like to see, touch, try, etc. We will be very pleased if they are interested.

Workshop with Esparto which is a vegetal fiber.

Centro de Artesanía Casa Palacio de los Moraga. Cuesta de Aldana, 1. 10003, Cáceres, España.

Learn More

The workshop’s target I intend to do is to show people the amazing world of Esparto.  This Natural fiber which has been used during millenia for humans beings in the whole Peninsula -Spain and also in Portugal, as well that in the North of Africa-  is a great tradition that it is getting lost because it is hard to learn, to work,  so that is one of the reasons why I intend to keep it. In order to accomplish my goals  I want people to get in touch with it. Further more is a tradition totally organic and therefore eco friendly. I am totally convinced that it is very important to keep our traditions alive.  For all these reasons I will do two workshops with people from an age around 12 years old and up with a maximum of 12 different participants each session, so I can guarantee a better understanding and dedication to all of them.  I will provide the attendants with all the necessary materials, teach them in around 3hours each day the basic technics to work with Esparto, its importance role in keeping our cultural identity alive and the need of its use in order to respect our Earth. I will teach them where it grows, its history, the relation of Esparto with human being, the importance of its use in substitution of other materials pollutant and two basic technics so they will be able to construct by themselves some object to understand better all of it. I will provide people with all the necessary materials such as the esparto, the tools to work with it and of course they will keep the objects that they build (lamp, carpet, little basket, this will depend on the abilities of each person). The place where the activity will be situated is an ancient palace located in the heart of the Antique City of Caceres, Extremadura, Spain, an unique place that belong to Artesanex , Asociación para la Artesanía en Extremadura, I am associated to this Association so they offer me to use one of its rooms totally equipped for the occasion and of course for free. The Workshop will be performed by the Master Ángel Avis Melo, Espartero de Plata in Spanish but we will have the presence of his sister Almudena Avis Melo who will be the translator (of course for free, just in order to allow more people to enjoy the activity) for the English, French and Italian people who wants to attend.  01 April 12 p.m.   02 April 12 p.m. 12 participants maximum Any experience required I will provide all the materials Minimum age 12 years old Spanish, English, French and Italian speaker are allowed
