FUSION 2024 – Biennial of Contemporary Glass Jewellery is pleased to announce the 30 creators selected to showcase their work at the biennial exhibition which will take place from 3 April 2024 at the MAVA – Museum of Contemporary Glass Art in Alcorcón, Spain, to coincide with the European Artistic Crafts Days 2024. This is also the date when selected works will be presented on-line on WCCE and Fundesarte channels!

The open call for submissions received applications from all over Europe, with 87 creators from 26 different countries submitting a total of 171 pieces for consideration. A jury of experts from various sectors carefully reviewed the submissions and selected 30 creators and 50 pieces to be featured in the biennial exhibition.

 

The selected creators are:

The FUSION 2024 jury, consisting of Francesca Giubilei, curator and co-founder of VeniceArtFactory, Silvia Martin Delgado, head of Fundesarte, Madrid, Mikkel Elming, director of Glas – Museum of Glass Art, Ebeltoft, Maria Luisa Martinez Garcia, director of MAVA – Museum of Contemporary Glass Art in Alcorcón and Laura Miguel Baumann, secretary general of WCCE, noted:

– The selected creators and their pieces draw inspiration from nature and express environmental concerns through their work, advocating for sustainability and raising awareness about issues like climate change. Furthermore, in their pieces they fuse personal narratives and emotions, exploring themes of identity and personal vulnerability, while also experimenting with techniques and materials. The array of applicants spans from well-established artists to young creators just starting their journey, while the variety of regions across Europe represented in the call, attests to a thriving glass jewellery community and its enduring relevance in contemporary crafts, art and design.-

 

FUSION 2024 will bring a representative sample of this sub-sector of European craft together in a single exhibition, with featured works highlighting mediums ranging from borosilicate glass and Murano glass to lampwork glass and fused glass, complemented by materials like sterling silver, stainless steel, steel wire, brass and various precious metals. In addition, the applied works employ techniques including casting, fusing, lampworking and coldworking, providing visitors with an insight into the diverse approaches used within contemporary glass jewellery design.

The exhibition, with all of the selected works, will open at the MAVA on 3 April 2024 at 12.00 CET to coincide with the European Artistic Craft Days 2024, while the selected works and creators will be presented on the online channels of WCCE and Fundesarte. A bilingual catalogue (English/Spanish) will also be published online with images of all the pieces.

 

FUSION 2024 is organised by MAVA – Museum of Contemporary Glass Art in Alcorcón, Fundesarte and WCCE; this edition of the biennial is part of the “Crafting” project, co-funded by the European Union.
